Where is Fidel?

Where is Fidel, is a series of photographs of interiors where Fidel Castro is present through portraits. The interiors, all taken in Havana, vary from shops, classrooms, offices, and private homes. In the process of seeking out these images, Calderon decided to confront the private and the public space.

Trying to understand this use of Fidel Castro’s image in private and public spaces she began to reflect upon the use of religious images within the Catholic religion. The Catholic Church uses images such as paintings and sculptures to evangelize. Political propaganda has used the same strategy, the use of images to reinforce political aims.
