La Cita

La Cita is a project who attempts to look at the motels in Colombia as a social and cultural phenomenon. They are small hotels where people can rent a room to have sex. The regular customers are ordinary people. Couples trying to break monotony, cheaters, etc. Calderon’s approach this phenomenon through the architecture, exploring the exteriors (facades, neon advertising), and interiors (rooms and parking spaces).

These places have an interesting aesthetics, the architecture is exotic, the decoration is cheesy romantic and pornographic. The rooms have pictures of naked women on the walls, dancing poles, mirrors in the ceiling and on the walls, jacuzzis, dancing floors with lights and TV with porno channels. The prevailing aesthetics speaks to the fantasies created by porn industry for a macho dominated society. The female fantasies are represented in the cheesy romantic decoration, like swans, hearts and cupid. This visual manifestation speaks about genders rolls and identity.
